Microorganisms and Plant Pathogens
It is noteworthy that most of the microorganisms encountered in any particular soil are harmless to plants with only a relatively few that function as plant pathogens or potential pathogens. Harmful microorganisms become dominant if conditions develop that are favorable to their growth, activity and reproduction. Under such conditions, soil borne pathogens (e.g., fungal pathogens) can rapidly increase their populations with devastating effects on the crop. If these conditions change, the pathogen population declines just as rapidly to its original state. Conventional farming sys tems that tend toward the consecutive planting of the same crop (i.e., mono culture)necessitate the heavy use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This, in turn, generally increases the probability that harmful, disease-producing, plant pathogenic microorganisms will become more dominant in agricultural soil.
